Elspeth Graham and Catherine Jeffrey were both nurses who served in the front line hospitals in France during the First World War. Elspeth wrote a detailed memoir about her experiences, and Catherine (“Kate”) wrote a diary. Both documents describe the rich, sometimes terrifying and overwhelming experiences of young women serving in a war zone far from home. Details about Elspeth and Kate are included in the topic book “Long Watchful Hours”. Voice recordings of some Kate and Elspeth’s original records of their experiences were made in 2016 by students at Douglas Academy. They bring the nurses’ words to life in a unique way, letting us hear the thoughts and feelings of these two young women.
